The son of a merchant and an herbalist, Zelante was exposed to culture and trade at a very young age. His father Ziante was a purveyor of fine fabrics and crafts, highly favored by nobles (for his wide selection and high quality) and common folk (for his fair prices and willingness to barter). His mother, Borista, was also looked upon in a favorable light by most. As the personal herbalist to the ruling family of the island of Muccio, she was often away from home, leaving Zelante to be raised primarily by his father.
From birth, Zelante was haunted. Not by tangible undead creatures, but in his dreams. While he has learned to sleep through the night now, these constant nightmares were a source of much distress and caused many outbursts as a child. Ziante, his father, hid from him for years that he also was tormented by nightmares nightly, as was his father before him. While it is not entirely uncommon for tieflings to catch glimpses of demonic imagery in their dreams due to their heritage, the fact that the dreams shared by father and son were nearly identical for generations was indeed an omen of some kind.
Zelante focused his will towards hiding the fact that the dreams effected him so much, to the point that he would see components of his dreams while awake. Having to constantly put on airs of normality, he became very good at bluffing his way out of nearly any situation. These skills of course aided in the trading houses, where he was afforded more and more responsibility in the family business, as well as in the courts when he tagged along with his mother.
Two years ago, tragedy struck when the entire noble family was killed. The perpetrators were assumed to have inside help, and fingers pointed towards Zelante’s mother, Borista. Being the only one in the household the night of the attack to walk away unscathed, she had little evidence to prove her innocence. After she was executed right outside of the family’s booth, life changed drastically for father and son. Due to the stigma of the incident, the business crumbled practically overnight, eventually causing Ziante to take his own life, a month and a day after the execution. Zelante fled the island, and has been searching for both a place in the world, and a way to clear his family’s name so that his parents may rest. On a whim while in a strange town, he saw a sign in the town square, looking for guards for a caravan.
